Commonly used blanks for machining are castings, forgings, profiles and weldments. Different types of blanks, as well as the accuracy, roughness and hardness of blanks, have a direct impact on the machining process. When choosing valve blank, we should consider the following elements:

(1) the material of the part and the requirements for the organization and performance of the material. The material of the parts specified in the design generally determines the type of blank. For example, part material is cast iron, so casting must be used to make blank. For steel parts, the mechanical properties of materials should be considered when selecting blank. For example, forging parts or weldments should be used for parts of high pressure valves in order to ensure good mechanical properties of materials. (2) the structure shape and shape size of the part. The structural switch of parts is an important factor affecting the selection of blank. For example, the valve body with complex structure switch can be cast. The size of the valve body can be cast by sand casting, and the small size is investment casting.

(3) the size of the programme of production. The larger the production program of parts is, the higher the accuracy and efficiency of rough manufacturing is, the better economic results will be.

(4) the condition of making blank. The blank should be selected according to the good equipment and technological level of the site, and the advanced blank manufacturing method should be adopted step by step in the light of the development prospect.
